Calm is…

We need calm! My family lives in a hurricane region and breathes a sigh of relief if we escape. Today, we wait out a tornado warning until 3:00 pm. Anxiety-producing.

What is calm? According to the Oxford Language Dictionary, the noun calm, means “the absence of violent or confrontational activity within a place or group.” A second definition: “the absence of wind.” Does that fit your definition?

Calm Words

Stay with me. Words arise…tranquility, stillness, quiet. Can you relate more to the emotions connected with these words rather than the absence of something?

My husband’s business took us to the beach for a weekend. A rare trip.

I needed calm. I walked, read, rested. But I also received. Feeling the squish of sand on the beach, caresses from the wind, and absorbing glorious colors—refreshment. I slipped out to the beach at dawn’s light and evening dusk. I used my camera at intervals, but mainly my eyes.

Returning home, I reinforced the inner calm by reliving the scenes and senses.
